Herzogenbuchsee 2 Women

Herzogenbuchsee sits in the Bernese Oberaargau, and the sport traces back to a gymnastics club, Turnverein Herzogenbuchsee, whose handball section broke away and became its own body, Handballverein Herzogenbuchsee, in 1987 — nineteen years after it first took shape in 1968.

The second women's team plays several rungs below the club's flagship side: while the first team competes in the Swiss Premium League 1, the top division, the second string is entered in the 1. Liga, the third tier. Players who progress through the ranks — among them Malin Rieder, now capped for Switzerland, and Muriel Hofer, who has passed 220 appearances at the top level — give some sense of what the pathway is meant to produce.

Matches against DHB Rotweiss Thun, billed locally as the Bärner Derby, belong to the first team's rivalry more than the second's, but the shared colours — red, white and green — and the shared home carry across both sides. Both play out of the Sporthalle Mittelholz, a hall that seats 500.
