Winterthur Women

Winterthur is a rail and industrial town in the canton of Zurich, and its handball crest has carried the yellow of the club since long before the football side ever fielded a women's team under the same city name. That colour gave the club its identity in 1962, a year after a group entered a school tournament as "Vikings" and decided the result was worth keeping going.

A merger with ATW Winterthur in 1991 shaped the club that plays today out of the WIN4 Halle, a modest hall seating 400 next to the larger AXA Arena on the same campus. The women's team competes in the Spar Premium League, the top flight of Swiss handball, while the men's side plays under a separate cooperation with Pfadi Winterthur — the women kept the Yellow name to themselves.

Two Swiss Cup finals mark the club's closest approach to a major trophy, both lost to LC Brühl: 24-30 in 2012 and 21-28 in 2016, four years apart against the same opponent. Lea Schüpbach, who captained the Swiss national team, went through the club before returning to it in 2026, one of several players who have left Winterthur and come back — Jenny Murer did the same, departing in 2016 and rejoining in 2022.

The Zürcher Derby against GC Amicitia Zürich gives the local rivalry its name, sharpened by shared history in the canton rather than by geography alone. Since 1971 the club has also run the Yellow Cup, an invitational tournament for men's national teams, a fixture on the Swiss handball calendar that has outlasted most of the club's own cup runs.

Two Swiss Cup final defeats in four years: that is the whole of Yellow Winterthur's record against LC Brühl on the biggest stage available to it.
