Nottwil's handball team arrives at the new season carrying the weight of the champion's tag once again, the name it has worn most often in Swiss women's handball over the past quarter-century. Six Premium League titles now sit on the shelf, the most recent from 2022, and the club has rarely gone long without adding something to the collection: a sixth Swiss Cup followed in 2025, decided by a late winning goal in the final.

The club did not start out as a handball side at all. It was founded in 1971 as a general gymnastics and athletics club, with a men's handball department following in 1974 and the women's team joining three years later. For decades it played under the name Spono Nottwil — an abbreviation of Sport Nottwil — before the rebrand to SPONO Eagles ahead of the 2015/16 season gave the women's team the identity it competes under today.

No name has mattered more to that history than Emmenegger. Caroline Emmenegger ran the side from midfield through three championships in the early 2000s, and her daughters carried the family into the next generation: Mia Emmenegger came through the club's own youth ranks before leaving for Vipers Kristiansand and then Team Esbjerg, where she was named the best young player in Europe for 2025. The rivalry with LC Brühl has supplied most of the drama along the way, the two clubs meeting so often in play-off finals that it needs no nickname beyond being called the top match in the women's game.

Home games are played at the Schweizerisches Paraplegikerzentrum in Nottwil, a ground that holds 1,200 under the club's yellow and black.
