About

The Swiss Premium League 1 (SPL1) is the premier women's handball competition in Switzerland. Founded in 1970 by the Swiss Handball Federation (SHV), it occupies the highest position in the national pyramid. The league currently features eight clubs competing in a structured season that culminates in a decisive playoff phase.

The campaign begins with a double round-robin regular season, ensuring each team plays 14 matches. The six highest-ranked sides progress to the 'Final Round' (Meisterrunde), which operates as another double round-robin. Crucially, points accumulated during the regular season are carried over into this stage, influencing the final standings. The four teams emerging from the Final Round enter the playoffs. Semifinals are contested over a best-of-three series, while the championship decider is determined by a best-of-five format.

Relegation and promotion are managed through a dedicated quadruple round-robin involving the bottom two SPL1 teams and the top two non-reserve sides from the second tier, SPL2. The two winners of this group advance to the top flight, while the losers drop down. Reserve teams are strictly ineligible for promotion regardless of performance.

LC Brühl holds the record for the most titles, with 34 victories, establishing significant dominance over the competition. This success includes a run of five consecutive championships from 2021 to 2025. Spono Eagles follow with six titles, and LK Zug has secured five. The league underwent a name change in 2025, reverting from the SPAR Premium League to the Swiss Premium League after the sponsorship with the supermarket chain ended. LC Brühl entered the 2026 season as the defending champion.
