Cup ties against Tyresö Handboll carry the label of a hot derby locally, and matches with AIK are billed simply as the Stockholmsderby. The club, known to its own as HHK, has spent most of its history working out of that Stockholm-suburb rivalry rather than out of any national spotlight, built instead on a production line running through its youth ranks: Melissa Petrén and Isabel van Kerkvoorde both came through the junior sides before playing for the Swedish national team, and Kicki Ström kept goal for the club through the late 1980s before doing the same for the country.

That youth structure has paid off in a specific age group. The F14 side, players born in 2004, won the Junior Swedish Championship three times — in 2013, 2014 and 2019 — a run no other honour in the club's history matches.

The senior teams have had a harder road. The women's side last played in the Swedish top flight, then called Elitserien, in the 1989/90 season, and its more recent history has run the other way: relegated from Allsvenskan in 2024, then straight back up after winning Division 1 Norra the following season. The men's team has moved in the opposite direction. Promoted from Division 2, it goes into the 2025/2026 season in Herrallsvenskan, the second tier, for the first time since the club was founded in 1971.

Both first teams now sit a level up from where they spent most of the past decade, with the men still finding their feet against opposition they have never faced before.
