Sitra sits on its own island off Bahrain's east coast, linked to the mainland by causeway, a place long known for pearling and later for its oil and aluminium works. Football gave the town a name beyond that industrial history, and Sitra Club has carried it since 1957.

The club has spent most of its life chasing a first major trophy rather than defending one. It has never taken the Bahraini Premier League, the Federation Cup, or the King's Cup, and the closest it has come was the 2025 King's Cup final, where it went down to Al-Khaldiya. Relegation has also shadowed the club: it dropped out of the top flight after finishing bottom of the 2013–14 season with six points, and needed until 2015–16 to work its way back.

Sitra's best-known name is A'ala Hubail, capped 74 times for Bahrain and joint top scorer at the 2004 AFC Asian Cup, a mark that still defines the club's reputation for producing forwards who could trouble bigger nations. His brother Mohamed played alongside him at the back, a rare case of two internationals from the same house wearing the same colours.

Home games are played some distance from Sitra itself, at the Bahrain National Stadium in Riffa, which puts the club on the doorstep of Al-Riffa and East Riffa. Geography rather than any old grudge has made those two sides the ones Sitra measures itself against, even though the fixture known locally as the Riffa derby belongs to the two Riffa clubs rather than to Sitra. The island's old title, the "Island of Pearls," still gets attached to the club in conversation, without ever quite becoming an official name.

What Sitra has kept, through relegation and near-misses alike, is the sense of a club built to represent one small, work-hardened island community since a group there decided, in 1957, that it should have a team of its own.
