Sokol Vršovice Women

In the 2023/2024 Czech Cup, Sokol Vršovice went further than in any season on record, reaching the quarter-finals before running into DHC Slavia Prague. No final, no trophy — but for a side with no senior honours to its name, the run stands as the high point anyone can point to.

The handball section of TJ Sokol Praha Vršovice counts its history from 1922, a date the club marked with a centenary in 2022, even as its own record of the sports division's formal registration points to 1930. Either way, the section did not run in a straight line: it was shut down under the wartime occupation between 1941 and 1945, and only returned to organised life after the Velvet Revolution in 1990, folding into another Prague unit two years later. What plays today under the blue and white of "Modrobílá síla" is a club that has been rebuilt more than once.

The team now sits in the second tier of Czech women's handball, the 1. Jana Chlupová anchors the back court, having come through at DHC Slavia before switching allegiance to Vršovice.

That fixture, the vršovické derby against DHC Slavia Prague, is the one match on the calendar that needs no further explanation in the neighbourhood.
