Tatran Bohunice

Brno has never had another club with both a men's and a women's handball section under one roof, which leaves Tatran Bohunice without a natural rival in the way clubs elsewhere measure themselves against a neighbour. The women's team came together in 1991 out of a merger with Lokomotiva-Ingstav.

The men's section did not exist at first. It took until 1961, more than three decades after the club itself started, for 44 members to form a proper men's team. The promotions came slowly and stuck: up to the second tier in 1985, then into the first league in 1999. The women moved faster, reaching their own first league in 1994 and, between 2004 and 2006, playing in the Czech-Slovak WHIL, the top flight of the day. In 2022 they went to the promotion playoffs for the Extraliga.

Both teams now sit a level below where they have peaked, the men in the second league and the women in the first, and neither has taken a national cup. The Czech Cup has been entered without ever being won, which is not a small detail for a club with this history, but a fair reflection of it.

They play in a 300-seat hall in Bohunice that opened in April 2003 and was built to handball, indoor football and volleyball standard, a modest step up from whatever ground the club used through the decades of name changes that came before it. Before the hall, before the 1961 men's team, before even the name Tatran, the club was registered as SK Slavoj Brno-Bohunice in 1929, one of the district's sports societies finding its feet in the years between the wars.
