About

The Australian Ice Hockey League occupies a unique space in the national sporting calendar. It runs during the Australian winter from April to August, operating when summer-based leagues like the AFL and NRL are inactive. The competition sits at the top of the Australian ice hockey pyramid as the premier national entity.

Established in 2000 after the collapse of the East Coast Super League, the league functions as a closed franchise system. Clubs enter via a licensing process rather than promotion from state-level competitions. This structure means there is no relegation, distinguishing it from many traditional football models.

On the ice, the format has evolved. While the league historically used conferences to manage travel across vast distances, these were abolished in 2025 for a unified schedule. Teams now play 28 games in the regular season. The regular season winner receives the H. Newman Reid Trophy.

The championship decider is the Goodall Cup Finals, a single-elimination tournament culminating in a Grand Final. This trophy is the national championship prize, first awarded in 1909, making it one of the oldest active sporting trophies in the country. The Newcastle Northstars hold the record for success, having won the Goodall Cup seven times. They are also the reigning champions following the 2025 season.

The league’s composition fluctuates due to the logistical challenges of Australian geography. Currently, it features ten teams, including the Melbourne Ice and Brisbane Lightning. This semi-professional setup fills a specific niche, offering high-level competition without the full professional infrastructure seen in other major sports.

Reforms have shaped its modern identity. These include the withdrawal and subsequent return of the Goodall Cup between 2009 and 2010 and the increase in game length from 50 to 60 minutes in 2022. The league continues to balance these structural changes with its commitment to maintaining a national footprint across multiple states.
