The Optibet Hockey League, officially the Latvian Hockey Higher League, serves as the premier professional ice hockey competition in Latvia. Founding members established the tournament in 1931 under the Latvian Winter Sport Union, with the inaugural championship concluding in the 1931–32 season. Operations halted during the Soviet era before the league resumed in 1991–92 following national independence. The current titleholder derives from a sponsorship agreement signed in 2017.
Competitors contest a regular season comprising 35 matches, after which the highest-placed sides advance to a playoff phase. The structure ranks above the Latvian Hockey First League, creating a pathway for teams to progress through the domestic hierarchy. International participation forms a distinctive element of the modern format, with clubs from Lithuania and Ukraine joining Latvian sides in a unified table to determine the regional champion.
Historical dominance belongs to HK Liepājas Metalurgs, which secured seven titles across the league’s history. In the most recent completed campaign, HK Mogo claimed the championship, marking their fifth victory. The competition maintains a separate identity from the short-lived Baltic Hockey League that operated between 2020 and 2021, functioning instead as the primary regional tournament for foreign and domestic entities alike. Official communications and fixtures are managed through the Latvian Hockey Federation’s digital presence.
