Age-group titles are where HS Rīga's record actually lives: between 2014 and 2024 the club topped Latvian championships at almost every level from U10 through U19. At senior level none of that has translated into a trophy — the closest HS Rīga has come in the Optibet Hockey League is fifth place, managed in both 2016–17 and 2017–18.

The club began life on 30 November 1999 as a sports school run under the Riga City Council, built to develop players rather than to chase a top-flight title. Its senior side only took shape in 2004–05, entering the Latvian Hockey Higher League as SK Rīga 18, and carried that name for a decade before switching to HS Rīga in 2015. For one season, 2022–23, the team played as HS Rīga/HK Dinaburga, with games shared out to Daugavpils.

Miks Indrašis and Rihards Bukarts both came up through the school before their careers took them elsewhere. Games against HK Kurbads and HK Prizma Riga carry the weight of a local derby, three clubs drawing from the same city. Home matches are played in the Riga Hockey School's own ice hall, a rink that holds 300.
