About

The New Zealand Ice Hockey League operates as the premier ice hockey competition in New Zealand, governed by Ice Hockey New Zealand. Founded in 2005, the league functions as a closed system, utilizing expansion and invitations rather than promotion or relegation to manage its team structure.

The current 2026 season features five senior clubs: Botany Swarm, Canterbury Red Devils, Dunedin Thunder, Southern Stampede, and West Auckland Admirals. A sixth participant, the Auckland Mako, competes as a development side with results excluded from the final standings. The regular season employs a European-style points system, rewarding regulation wins with three points and shootout victories with two. Each senior team plays 16 home-and-away fixtures during the Southern Hemisphere winter, running from May to September.

Geographic distribution across both the North and South Islands creates significant travel demands, which the league supports. To protect local talent, strict regulations limit import players to a maximum of four per game, with goalkeepers counting as two. The top-ranked teams advance to a best-of-three finals series. The victor of this playoff is awarded the Birgel Cup, a trophy renamed in 2010 from the original NZIHL Trophy. The Southern Stampede hold the record for success, securing 11 championships and a six-title streak between 2020 and 2025.

While professional in organisation, the league maintains a strict amateur status for its participants. Players do not receive salaries but are permitted expense reimbursements. The competition is overseen by commissioner Guenther Birgel, the league’s founder. Unlike many international counterparts, the NZIHL does not feed into a higher national tier, standing as the definitive peak for domestic ice hockey in the country.
