Chonnam Dragons edged past Cheonan 1:0 in the K-League 2 Regular Season on Friday. The hosts sat 15th in the table with 22 points, one place above the visitors who had 21 points from 23 matches. It was a tight affair decided by a single moment in the second half.
Chu Sang-Hoon broke the deadlock in the 62nd minute, ending a barren spell for his side. The home side had been struggling to create clear chances all afternoon. To be fair, Cheonan's back line held firm for most of the contest before that moment changed everything.
A yellow card for Yoon Min-ho in the 22nd minute showed the tension early on. Cheonan made three changes at the break, bringing on Son Gun-ho, Park Tae-Yong and Yoon Min-ho himself.
Cheonan pushed hard after the interval, making several substitutions in quick succession. Cha Seung-Hyeon, Lee Joon-Ho, Kim Gyeong-Jae and Lee Ji-Seung all came on in the second half. Kwon Yong-seung picked up a booking in the 80th minute as the visitors grew desperate. Jeong Ji-Yong was the final change in the 88th minute.
The numbers told a different story from the result. Cheonan held 67 per cent possession and registered nine shots on target, while Chonnam managed just one shot on target from their 33 per cent possession. The hosts had 99 attacks against 122 for the visitors, but accuracy proved decisive rather than volume.
Chonnam moved to 22 points from 22 games, keeping themselves within striking distance of the play-off places. Cheonan sat on 21 points after 23 matches, having lost their last outing against Suwon Bluewings. The result ended a run of poor form for the hosts.
