Match report

Barnsley beat Leyton Orient 3:1 in League One's third round of matches on Saturday afternoon. Cameron McGeehan's penalty in the 64th minute changed the complexion of the game, and the visitors added two more goals in the second half to leave the Boleyn Ground with all three points. Orient had taken an early lead through Makenzie Kirk, but the visitors' control grew as the match wore on.

Kirk's goal came in the 15th minute, the first real chance of the afternoon, and Orient held that lead for nearly an hour. Barnsley's response was surgical—McGeehan stepped up for the penalty in the 64th minute and did not miss. Reyes Cleary then doubled the advantage in the 76th minute before Nicholas Oyekunle put the game to bed early in the 85th minute.

The statistics tell a story that matches what you see on the pitch. Barnsley had 53 per cent possession and registered seven shots on target compared to Orient's three. The hosts managed three shots on target from only five attempts inside the penalty area, while Barnsley tried from eleven. Orient made 285 passes and Barnsley 325, but the difference was in the quality of the chances created—both sides managed two big chances, yet only Barnsley found the back of the net.

There was plenty of friction throughout the encounter. Orient's Jonathan Bland and Isaac Hayden both received yellow cards before half-time, while Tyrese Noslin, Sam Gale, Cameron McGeehan, Tony Springett, Theo Archibald and Fin Stevens were booked in the second half. The referee had no need for a red card, but the game grew increasingly physical as Orient chased the result.

Substitutions tell you something about the management decisions. Orient brought on L. Alker and Armando Dobra at half-time, then replaced Jaze Kabia and Isaac Hayden in the 60th minute. Barnsley made their changes later, bringing on James Morris and Yusuf Akhamrich in the 69th minute, and Patrick Kelly twice in stoppage time.

By then, Orient had dropped to sixth in the table with four games played, two wins and two defeats for six points. Barnsley sit 11th after three matches, one win, one draw and one loss yielding four points. The result does nothing to separate the sides dramatically, but Barnsley have shown they can take points away from home when it matters.
