Mamelodi Sundowns saw off Milford 2:0 in the Premier Social League's regular season on Tuesday evening. The hosts opened the scoring just before the break and added a second after the interval to secure a comfortable victory at Loftus Versfeld Stadium.
And here's the thing about that first goal — it came at 45 plus two minutes, and it was I. Rayners who finished it. Sundowns had controlled possession through 61 per cent of the game, but it wasn't until the closing moments of the half that they broke through. The visitors had created only one big chance all night and couldn't stop the run of play.
The second half brought a flurry of changes. To be fair, the coaches at both ends were reshuffling, with B. Mokoena and Z. Mdunyelwa both off for Sundowns at 59 minutes, while T. Mbunga and T. Mabena came on together for the hosts at 62. The tactical shift didn't immediately change the scoreline, but it altered the rhythm.
By then, Milford had been pushed deeper, their 39 per cent possession telling the story of a side trying to survive rather than compete. A. van Wyk made Sundowns' second at 76 minutes, and the game was gradually slipping away from the visitors. They managed six shots on target but couldn't convert any of them.
The statistics paint a picture of dominance without necessarily domination. Sundowns registered 117 attacks to Milford's 90, created five big chances against one, and completed 528 passes to 314. Yet both sides found the target six times — Sundowns with 61 per cent accuracy, Milford with 67 per cent. Chances went begging for the visitors.
The result keeps Sundowns second in the table with 13 points from five games, unbeaten so far. Milford remain fifth on seven points, with two defeats already on their record. What matters more than the numbers is that Sundowns have now won four of five, and the pattern is becoming clear.
