RW Volendam secured a narrow 2:1 victory over HFC Haarlem in the Tweede Divisie's fourth round of the regular season on Saturday. The hosts led from the opening exchanges before weathering a second-half surge to claim all three points.
L. Veerman opened the scoring in the seventh minute, capitalising on Volendam's control of proceedings. To be fair, Haarlem had more attacks in total but struggled to convert possession into meaningful chances. The visitors' midfield was pinned back as Volendam dictated the tempo from their 67 per cent share of the ball.
Things came to a head after the break when Haarlem pushed forward in search of an equaliser. P. Avoki found the net in the 64th minute to level matters, and suddenly the match was wide open. Volendam responded by bringing on D. Demuynck in the 61st minute to shore up their defence.
By then, the hosts had found their footing again. P. Plugboer ended Volendam's barren spell in the 71st minute, slotting home to restore the lead just as Haarlem made three changes in quick succession. The visitors threw everything forward but could not find a way back into it.
The numbers tell an interesting story. Volendam registered just 4 shots on target compared to Haarlem's 3, yet they were clinical when it mattered. Haarlem enjoyed 121 attacks to their hosts' 92, but possession without penetration proved futile.
The result moves Volendam clear of the relegation zone with 7 points from 4 games. Haarlem remain in 12th place on 4 points after suffering their second defeat of the campaign.
