Stal Rzeszów and Stal Mielec played out a 1-1 draw in the I Liga on Saturday, a result that keeps both sides in the lower half of the table after three matchdays. Puerto gave the hosts the lead before Goss equalised deep into the second half, but the match was defined by what happened away from the ball. And here's the thing — it was never really going to be a tactical masterclass with both sides still finding their rhythm.
Puerto struck in the 50th minute to put Rzeszów ahead, but the game shifted when Kukulka picked up his second yellow card in the 75th minute. By then Mielec had already taken their chance, Goss finding the net in the 79th minute to level matters. The red card meant Rzeszów had to chase the game with ten men, though they found no answer in the closing stages.
There were plenty of bookings throughout — Kukulka also received his first caution in the 18th minute, while Kwiecien and Salamon went into the book before half-time. The substitutions came thick and fast after the break, with six changes between the 46th and 90+4th minutes as both managers tried to find a winner. To be fair, neither side looked like they were going to break through with any regularity.
Rzeszów remain in 13th place with eight points from seven games, while Mielec sit one position higher on nine points. The home side's recent form has been patchy at best, with losses to Ark Gdynia and Chrobry Głogów contrasting with a draw against Ruch Przemyśl. Mielec's results have been more erratic — a 3-3 draw with Podbeskidzie and a 3-4 defeat to Avia Świdnik showing they can score but also concede freely.
The result leaves both clubs in similar positions, neither able to claim superiority over their local rivals. Rzeszów will rue the timing of Kukulka's dismissal, but Mielec cannot complain about leaving with a point. The table says little this early on — seven games in and the gaps remain small, but the pattern of results so far suggests neither side is ready to push for promotion just yet.
