Ajax claim narrow victory over Utrecht in Eredivisie opener
Ajax secured a 1-0 win against Utrecht in the opening round of the women's Eredivisie on Sunday. The result puts the visitors in a strong position as they continue their push for the title. And here's the thing — one goal was all it took to separate two sides with very different ambitions.
Ajax dominated possession throughout, holding 69 per cent of the ball compared to Utrecht's 31. They registered 177 attacks against 104 from the hosts, with seven shots on target to two. To be fair, the Dutch side didn't need to be clinical — they simply controlled the tempo and waited for their moment.
The statistics tell the story clearly. Utrecht managed just three corners while Ajax earned six, and both teams received one yellow card. Seven shots on target for Ajax produced one goal, while two on target from Utrecht yielded nothing. By then, it was evident who was dictating play from the first whistle.
Ajax sit third in the table with six points from two games, both victories. Utrecht are seventh with a single point from two matches, one draw and one defeat. The gap between them at the top of the table is already perceptible, and this result only widens it.
Utrecht's recent form has been mixed — they beat Herenveen 5-1 in May but lost 3-0 to Feyenoord. Ajax, meanwhile, have won both of their opening fixtures this season, including a 2-1 victory over Rangers Women. The visitors are building momentum, while the hosts will need to regroup quickly.
