Drake Batterson revealed he messaged Brad Marchand after his viral jab at Tim Stützle's captaincy bid, calling it just Marchand being Marchand.
Drake Batterson said he reached out to Brad Marchand and Tim Stützle after Marchand's dig at Ottawa's captaincy race went viral.
Marchand, who trained with Batterson over the summer, had replied to a post naming Stützle among the finalists for the Senators' vacant captaincy with "Ha-ha-ha... Stützle... ha-ha-ha." Batterson said he messaged Marchand directly.
"I texted him, 'Marchy, what are you doing?' (laughs). I told Timmy it's all good. He's been doing this for 20 years, it's just Marchy being Marchy," Batterson said.
Stützle himself brushed off the jibe, saying he doesn't care about it, as reported separately on 2026-09-08.
Marchand will line up alongside former Senators captain Brady Tkachuk in Florida this season. Ottawa traded Tkachuk there in June after he requested a move, and the Senators still have not named a new captain. Tkachuk is set to return to Ottawa with the Panthers on 21 October.
