NHL in Talks to Expand Franchises to Atlanta and Phoenix
Deputy commissioner Bill Daly says at least two investor groups are pursuing Phoenix, while a full market study is planned for Atlanta before any decision.
The NHL is in discussions with several groups of investors about placing new franchises in Atlanta and Phoenix, deputy commissioner Bill Daly has confirmed.
Carter says funding is in place, though he has only partly backed that claim up in public, and no arena site has yet been settled on.
Daly told ESPN the league intends to run a full market study of the Atlanta region before going further. "Certainly, it would be important for our owners to understand why this time will be different from the past," he said. "I would say Atlanta has changed a lot over the years. I think the location of the arena will matter very, very much."
He was equally direct on Phoenix. "I think with the right location, Phoenix would be a great market," Daly said. "At least two investor groups have been in talks with us about Phoenix."
Phoenix's Coyotes played from 1996 until 2014.
