Alexander Ovechkin flies to the United States on 10 September to begin preparations for his 22nd NHL season, his agent Gleb Chistyakov has confirmed.
Washington open their campaign on the road against Carolina Hurricanes, the reigning Stanley Cup holders, on 3 October. The league-wide season starts on 29 September.
Ovechkin signed a new one-year deal with the Capitals on 2 July. He arrives at training camp with 1,006 goals in regular season and play-offs combined, second on the all-time list behind Wayne Gretzky's 1,016. In the regular season alone he already stands as the league's leading scorer in history, and the pursuit of Gretzky's combined record continues into the new campaign.
