The 35-year-old Forward spent last season with Anaheim, playing 75 matches and putting up 50 points — 22 goals and 28 assists — with 34 minutes in penalties.
Over his NHL career, split between the Rangers and the Ducks, Kreider has 958 matches and 632 points, 348 of them goals. The Rangers took him 19th overall at the 2009 draft.
He leaves an Anaheim side sitting third in the NHL after seven matches this season, playing out of the 17,174-capacity Honda Center.
A one-year deal at 35 suggests Montreal are after a season of proven scoring on the wing rather than a long-term piece, with Kreider's finishing meant to add punch up front.
