Ilya Nabokov Debuts for Avalanche at Rookie Faceoff
The 23-year-old Russian goalie stopped shots for Colorado in a 7-2 win over Anaheim, conceding twice while making several sharp saves in San Jose.
Ilya Nabokov made his debut for the Colorado Avalanche organisation on Saturday, starting in goal against Anaheim at the Rookie Faceoff tournament in San Jose. Colorado won the fixture 7-2.
The 23-year-old Russian, formerly of Metallurg, played two periods and conceded twice — to Kruz Lucius and Noah Kosick. According to Yahoo Sports, he also produced several sharp saves, including a leaping stop off a shot from Ryan Chuzdzinski in the first period.
The tournament outing gives Colorado an early look at a goaltender they will hope can push through the system, at a club that has spent the off-season securing its core rather than its crease — defenceman Cale Makar signed a record eight-year, $163.2m extension with the Avalanche earlier this month.
