Sean Horcoff Named Interim GM of Red Wings
The 47-year-old replaces Steve Yzerman, who left in July to become senior adviser to owner Chris Ilitch as the club continues its search for a permanent hockey operations chief.
Sean Horcoff has taken over as interim general manager of the Detroit Red Wings. The 47-year-old replaces Steve Yzerman, who left the post in July to become senior adviser to owner and chief executive Chris Ilitch.
Horcoff has been with the Red Wings organisation since the 2016/17 season, when he was appointed director of player development. From 2021/22 he held the posts of assistant general manager and general manager of the club's AHL affiliate.
Ilitch explained the decision.
"While the process of finding the ideal leader of Red Wings hockey operations continues, I am grateful to Sean for taking on these responsibilities. Sean's knowledge of our organisation and wealth of experience allow us to move forward with confidence into the coming season with a decision-maker in place, while we continue a thorough and methodical search for a permanent candidate at a pace that suits us. Sean has my full trust and is empowered to make decisions in the interests of our organisation," said Ilitch.
How long Horcoff holds the role, and whether he is eventually handed the job on a permanent basis, will depend on the search Ilitch says is still under way.
