Tretiak: Universiade First Step for Russian Hockey

Vladislav Tretiak, president of the Russian Ice Hockey Federation, says Russia's junior and under-20 sides will travel to the Winter Universiade in late January, the first step towards a wider return to international competition.

Russian national teams have been barred from IIHF-run tournaments since the spring of 2022. Tretiak was responding to a question about earlier comments from federation vice-president Roman Rotenberg, who had raised hope of the junior and under-20 sides leading Russia's way back onto the international calendar.

Both the men's and women's squads will take part in the Universiade, according to Tretiak.

He has pushed publicly for Russia's return to junior and under-20 tournaments, a position that lines up with Tretiak's account of the Universiade as the opening move.

If the appearance in January goes ahead as described, it would be the clearest marker yet of Russian hockey testing the water for readmission to age-group world championships, though Tretiak stopped short of naming a tournament or date beyond the Universiade itself.
