Kyle Konin to Be Lightning's Emergency Backup Goalie
The 28-year-old American, a Tampa resident, has already been added to NHL game-day rosters five times since 2021/22 due to injuries to other goaltenders.
Kyle Konin will serve as Tampa Bay's emergency backup goaltender, according to insider Erik Erlendsson.
The 28-year-old American lives in Tampa and has held the role before. Since the 2021/22 season he has been added to an NHL game-day roster five times because of injuries to other goaltenders — three times with the Lightning, once each with Philadelphia and St. Louis.
Under the terms of the new collective bargaining agreement, every NHL club will carry a permanent emergency backup goaltender, who will also travel with the team on the road. Players holding that status wear number 00. Goaltenders with NHL experience, or with more than 80 games in professional leagues, are not eligible for the role.
Konin last played competitively in the 2019/20 season, for Grand Valley State, a college side in the American Collegiate Hockey Association.
