Two-time Olympic champion Boris Mikhailov expects Russia's status in IIHF competition to change within two to three years, though not immediately.

"I think time needs to pass for this. The federation, the sports ministry and all the officials who care about Russian sport and follow it closely are doing everything to change the situation. I believe that in the next two to three years something should change," Mikhailov said.

The Russian Ice Hockey Federation (FHR) has taken the matter to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), which will hear its appeal against the IIHF's decision.

If CAS takes up the case, its ruling may set the timetable more firmly than any forecast. Until then, the question of Russian participation in IIHF events stays open.
