Afanasyev: Avangard Built Squad to Chase Gagarin Cup
Forward Yegor Afanasyev says Avangard's roster is strong enough to compete for the Gagarin Cup, crediting sharper structure and expecting injured players to return soon.
Yegor Afanasyev says Avangard have put together a squad strong enough to challenge for the Gagarin Cup this season, and that the club is thinking about nothing else.
The forward pointed to the 3-2-1 shift in fortunes as the reason for confidence. Avangard had dropped three straight before facing Spartak, a run Afanasyev put down to sloppy structure rather than a lack of quality.
Against Spartak, he said, the team was sharper, with goalkeeper Ivan Prosvetov singled out for a strong performance.
Afanasyev also flagged the returning injured players as a boost still to come, saying Omsk has lost several good hockey players to injury and expects them to help once back in the lineup.
