Agustinos Alicante

Agustinos Alicante sit in the División de Honor Plata, Spanish handball's second tier, a place they reached only in 2014, lost again in 2018, and clawed back in 2023 by winning the Primera Nacional. The club has never played in the top-flight Liga ASOBAL.

The story starts at the San Agustín school, where handball activity dates to 1971 and Father Ángel Escapa put together the first youth side a year later. The club itself, Club Deportivo Agustinos Balonmano, was not formally constituted until 1979, and it has stayed tied to the school ever since, playing at the Pabellón del Colegio San Agustín, a 600-seat hall on Calle Pintor Pedro Camacho.

What the club points to first is not a trophy but a production line. The academy has sent players through to the national team, among them Claudio Gómez and Jaime García.

There was a women's side too, Club Balonmano Mar Alicante, sharing the same venue under the Agustinos banner, and for a few seasons it did what the men's team never has: it competed at European level, reaching the final of the Recopa de Europa in 2010-11. That team's run to the Copa de la Reina final and a Supercopa de España appearance came in the same short window, then the success did not carry forward.
