AS Marsa

Ferjani Derouiche kept goal for AS Marsa — Sofiène Khabir and Tahar Ferjaoui trained under him. It fits a side built on the produce of its own courtyard rather than imported names: Tahar Aniba left La Marsa for a Tunisia squad that won the 1965 African Cup of Nations, and Sabri Jaballah went from the same academy to the 1998 World Cup squad.

The club began in 1939 as a scouting association, Association Sportive des Scouts Musulmans de La Marsa. Locals call it Gnawiya, after a Tunisian okra dish, a nod to the green and yellow the team wears.

Five Tunisian Cups mark the best of it, won in 1961, 1977, 1984, 1990 and 1994, but the runners-up column runs longer: nine final defeats, the most recent in 2022, so the cup has been a habit that does not always pay off at the final hurdle. A single League Cup, in 2007, sits alongside it, and abroad the club reached the semi-finals of the Arab Cup Winners' Cup twice, in 1992 and 1994, without ever going further.

Fixtures against Stade Tunisien and JS El Omrane carry the weight of the capital's geography rather than any named derby, both clubs sitting close enough to La Marsa that bragging rights stay local. Through it all, it is Derouiche's name that keeps surfacing whenever the club's goalkeepers are asked who taught them.
