Drahomír Válek once had this city playing basketball worth remembering: under him Dukla Olomouc took the Czechoslovak League title twice, in 1973 and 1975, with Zdeněk Kos, Pavel Pekárek, Vladimír Dzurilla and Jiří Zídek Sr. on the floor. That club, run by the army, was gone by 1994.

Basketbal Olomouc is what filled the gap, though even its own starting point is not entirely fixed: the commercial register shows 2000, while the Czech Basketball Federation counts 2013 as the founding year. A 2. Liga (Group C) title in the 2015/16 season carried the team up into the 1. Liga, the second tier of Czech men's basketball.

Home games are played at a school gymnasium, the SH Gymnázia Olomouc on Čajkovského Street, known locally as Čajkaréna, which seats 204. The yellow and black on its jerseys mark it apart from BK Olomoucko's blue and white and from the red and white Dukla once wore.

The league titles from the 1970s sit with a club that no longer exists. Basketbal Olomouc has yet to put its own name on a national trophy.
