Yuri Kiselyov is the name older Bryansk hockey people reach for, and the nickname they gave him was "the Bryansk Bobby Orr". Vladimir Pekatoros, a coach from the same era, is the other name that comes up when the club's early decades are discussed.

They played under a different name then. From 1963 until 2008 the team was HC Desna. It also traces its line back to Dynamo Bryansk, which played from 1957 until the club took its 1963 start date. The move up came in 1985, when Desna won the final tournament of the strongest physical culture collectives. That result earned promotion to Class A, the second league of the USSR Championship.

The renaming to HC Bryansk in 2008 came with the blue and white colours and a home rink that holds 1,000 spectators, the Ice Palace in the Volodarsky district.

The senior side plays in the Russian Hockey League (RHL). Its youth team plays in the National Junior Hockey League (NMHL). Maxim Erofeyev, a forward, has been central to the team's recent seasons.

In 2025/26 Bryansk won the regional championship of the Bryansk Oblast, beating Champion from Pochep in the final. The nearest rivals are Kozhany Rakety of Kaluga and Molnia of Novozybkov, and no derby name is attached to those games.
