Kahleah Copper was named Finals MVP in 2021, the year the Sky beat the Phoenix Mercury 3–1 to win the franchise's first WNBA Championship. It was the payoff for a build that had already run through one runner-up finish, in 2014, also against Phoenix. Candace Parker, who joined later with two MVP awards already behind her, had her number 3 retired; Allie Quigley, twice named Sixth Woman of the Year, saw her number 14 go up as well. Elena Delle Donne passed through as Rookie of the Year in 2013 before her MVP season elsewhere, and Sylvia Fowles built her Defensive Player of the Year reputation here before doing the same in Minnesota.
The franchise took the court for the first time in 2006 as an expansion side and lost 29 of 34 games. The name had been settled the previous autumn, chosen along with a blue, yellow, black and white palette meant to read as Chicago's sky on a clear day.
The 2024 draft pulled Angel Reese to Chicago at seventh overall, pairing her against Caitlin Clark, taken by the Indiana Fever, and carrying over a rivalry the two had built in college.
Home games are played at Wintrust Arena, a 10,387-seat venue on Chicago's Near South Side, within sight of the skyline the team's colours were chosen to match.
