Contazara Zaragoza

The Derbi del Moncayo against BM Soria carries more history than anything Contazara has built itself; the Aragón derby with BM Huesca runs closer to home. Both fixtures matter because the club they replaced is still a live memory in Zaragoza. Balonmano Aragón, also known as CAI Aragón, reached a European final in 2007 before folding in 2016 under financial strain, and for four years the city had no top-level handball at all.

Contazara filled that gap in 2020, not by starting from nothing but by merging what remained of the local game: Balonmano Adecor and its affiliate Corazonistas joined with Balonmano Ademar and El Pilar Maristas, with Balonmano Dominicos folding in later. The club began life three tiers down, in the Primera División Nacional, and needed five seasons to work back up — third place in 2023-24, then runners-up in 2024-25. Promotion to División de Honor Plata in 2025 came sideways rather than directly: Contazara lost the playoff to Proin Sevilla, then took the division place anyway after BM La Roca withdrew for financial reasons, the same trouble that had ended CAI Aragón nine years earlier.

The one trophy so far, the Copa de la Federación Aragonesa in 2022, came against Tarazona and belongs to the club's early, regional years rather than to its current level. Eduardo Gálvez Ibáñez coached the side through the 2025 promotion before Carlos García Fernández took over in February 2026. On the pitch, Juan Martínez has scored more than any teammate, 628 goals since the club's founding.

The debut season in Plata brought a 12th-place finish and nothing worse — survival, not contention. Contazara has yet to win anything at the level its predecessor once reached a European final from.
