BM Guadalajara

Handball had already gone once in Guadalajara: the original Club Balonmano Guadalajara folded in 1996 after money ran out. When the Realitas real estate group set up a new club in 2007, the point was simply to bring the sport back to the city under a fresh name, Asociación Deportiva Ciudad de Guadalajara. It did not take long to show. The team won the Primera División Nacional, the third tier, in its first season, then took the División de Honor Plata in 2009–10 to reach Liga ASOBAL for the first time. It has gone back up twice more since, in 2022 and 2024, each promotion following a spell back down in the second tier.

In the top flight, eighth place in Liga ASOBAL, reached in 2013–14 and again in 2017–18, remains the club's ceiling, alongside two Copa del Rey semi-finals. One result stands above the league table, though: in 2017 Guadalajara drew 26-26 away at FC Barcelona, a result that ended Barça's unbeaten run of 133 league matches at home.

The team plays in purple and black, which brought the nickname Los Morados, and sponsorship has rewritten the name on the shirt several times over the years without the club ever losing it entirely — Reálitas, Rayet, Quabit, Cívitas, Sanicentro, Impulse. Local rivalry runs against BM Cuenca in the Derbi de Castilla-La Mancha, a fixture where the league position of either side tends to matter less than the manner of these games.

What began as an attempt to undo a folding twenty years ago is now a club with three second-tier titles to its name, still chasing a settled place among Spain's top handball sides.
