Dominic Gasso, an academy graduate, scored the club's first-ever USL Championship play-off winner in 2021.

The story starts in 2010, when Sean Mann set up the Detroit City Futbol League. Two years later, Mann and four others — Alex Wright, Todd Kropp, David Dwaihy and Ben Steffans — turned that idea into a club, built from nothing rather than inherited from any of Detroit's earlier professional teams. The nickname, Le Rouge, nods to both the Rouge River and the city's French roots; the colours are burgundy and gold.

For years the club has played its home matches at Keyworth Stadium in Hamtramck, the enclave inside Detroit's borders. That arrangement is temporary. In Corktown, on the site of the former Southwest Detroit Hospital, Le Rouge are building AlumniFi Field — the first stadium in Detroit's history built purely for football and funded privately. It is due to open in 2028 with room for 15,000.

The club's biggest nights have come in the US Open Cup, where lower-division sides get a shot at MLS opposition. Detroit City beat Columbus Crew 2-1 in 2022 and knocked out Houston Dynamo in 2024.

Danny Dichio has been head coach since November 2023, working under Mann, still chief executive, and co-owner Mike Lasinski.
