On 30 January 2019, Elazığspor set a Guinness World Record by signing twenty-two players inside two hours, the moment a transfer ban lifted.

The club came together on 24 March 1967, when three local sides, Merkez Gençlik, Güvenspor and Harputspor, merged into one. It has never reached the Süper Lig or lifted the Turkish Cup, and its best run in the cup stopped at the quarter-finals in 1975–76. What it has managed instead is a habit of climbing back through the lower divisions: four 3. Lig titles, a 2. Lig championship in 2010–11, and runner-up finishes in the 1. Lig in 2001–02 and 2011–12 that carried the club up a tier each time. A 3. Lig play-off title followed in 2023–24.

Supporters call the team Gakgoşlar , a word from the local dialect for a fellow townsman of Elazığ, and matches against Malatyaspor are fought out as the "Doğunun Derbisi", the Derby of the East. The ground, the Elazığ Stadyumu, reopened in May 2023 with the old "Atatürk" name dropped from the signage.

After the 2020 earthquake struck Elazığ, Elazığspor withdrew from the 2019–20 Second League season.
