Northwestern still calls it the Land of Lincoln Trophy game, but Illinois has been trading blows just as long with Purdue over the Purdue Cannon and with Ohio State over a wooden turtle named Illibuck, three rivalries built on decades of shared conference standings rather than a single grievance. All three predate almost everything the program has done since, because Illinois joined the Big Ten Conference at its founding and has been measuring itself against the same neighbours for most of the 136 years that followed.

The program's best stretch ran through the 1910s and 1920s under Robert Zuppke, who took over in 1913 and produced four unbeaten seasons; teams under his charge in 1914, 1919, 1923 and 1927 were later credited as national champions by various retrospective selectors, and the 1914 and 1919 sides did it without losing more than one game between them. A quieter peak came in 1951, when Ray Eliot's team went 9–0–1 and then beat Stanford 40–7 in the 1952 Rose Bowl, a game notable for being the first college football contest shown on national television.

Gies Memorial Stadium, opened in 1923 as a tribute to the university's war dead, took its current name only in September 2025 after a $100 million gift from alumnus Larry Gies; the ground has been through enough rebuilding, including the early-2000s "Illinois Renaissance" project, that its capacity now sits well below the 78,297 it once held for a single record crowd.

No one who came through Champaign is remembered the way Red Grange is. His name sits alongside five other Illinois players in the Pro Football Hall of Fame, but it was Grange, running for Zuppke in the 1920s, who gave the Fighting Illini the kind of national attention a Big Ten program from a college town rarely gets on its own.
