Blue Devils

Duke has taken the Southern Conference title ten times and the Atlantic Coast Conference eight, most recently in 2025. The bulk of that record belongs to an era when the team played first as Trinity College, before the university took the Duke name in 1924; the football side traces back further still, to 1888. The nickname itself crossed the Atlantic before it settled in Durham, borrowed from the French "les Diables Bleus."

Steve Spurrier spent three seasons on the sideline, from 1987 to 1989. Further back, Sonny Jurgensen threw his way into the Pro Football Hall of Fame after leaving Duke in the 1950s, and Ace Parker remains the rarer case: a Blue Devil enshrined in both the pro football and baseball halls of fame.

Duke has gone 9-9 in bowl games, with wins stretching from the 1939 Cotton Bowl against TCU to the 2023 Birmingham Bowl against Troy. Wallace Wade Stadium holds 35,018.

Duke and the North Carolina Tar Heels have fought for the Victory Bell every year since 1922.
