FK Košice

Košice went without a senior football club for the best part of a year after FC VSS Košice folded in July 2017. What returned in April 2018 was legally a new body, registered from scratch, but it kept the city's colours.

The name change to FC Košice marked the break, though the club still carries the record of what came before it: a Slovak Superliga title in 1997/98, the peak of a run that also brought the Slovak Super Cup that same year, and Slovak Cup wins stretching from 1973 through to 2014. Further back, under Czechoslovakia, the club lifted the domestic cup twice in the late 1970s. None of that silverware belongs to the 2018 entity in a strict legal sense, but in Košice it is treated as the same club's history, not someone else's.

Matches are played at the Košická futbalová aréna, which holds 12,555, and the fixture that still draws the biggest crowds is against FC Tatran Prešov, played out as the Východné derby — the eastern Slovakia derby. The team plays in yellow and blue, and is known to its own supporters simply as the Žlto-modrí, the yellow-blues.

Of the names to have come through the club, Nemanja Matić is the one recognised furthest from Košice — a midfielder who moved on to Chelsea and Manchester United, long after his early football was played on this side of the city's football story.
