Chênois measure themselves against Servette and against Meyrin, and the two rivalries pull in different directions: the derby against Meyrin runs on geography, both clubs playing out of the Geneva area, while Servette carries the weight of a shared past — from 2004 to 2007 the club competed as a joint venture, "SG Chênois & Servette", before the partnership was dissolved and Chênois went back to standing on its own.

Michel Bays founded the club in Thônex in September 1968, and it kept variations of that name until 2016, when it settled on CS Chênois Genève Handball. The club has never won a Swiss title or a Cup, and its best league finish, seventh, came in the 2006/07 season — a campaign built partly around Thomas Molliex, a French international who was the team's top scorer that year. Konrad Affolter, an earlier figure in the club's history, became the first Swiss player to take his handball abroad to a foreign league.

The women's section went further than the men's side ever has, reaching the Swiss vice-championship in 2014 under coach Imad Yacoubi. The men's team, meanwhile, has spent much of its history bouncing between divisions: relegated from the top flight in 2007/08, dropped again from the second tier in 2009, and knocked back down after finally reaching the top flight again in 2022. Each time it has come back — promotion in 2010, in 2019, and again in 2024, when Chênois beat Handball Stäfa in the promotion playoffs to return to the Quickline Handball League.

Patrick Cazal took over as head coach in 2025, following Juan Basmalis Gomez, who had run the team since 2021. Games are played at the Centre Sportif de Sous-Moulin, in front of a ground that holds 1,200.
