Hamm-Westfalen ASV

The WESTPRESS arena in Hamm holds barely 2,500 people.

The club traces itself to 1904, and the old name, ASV Hamm 04/69, carried both that founding year and a 1969 merger with other clubs from the town.

Promotion to the 1. Bundesliga came once, after the club topped the northern group of the 2. Handball-Bundesliga in 2010. The closest they have come back since was finishing runners-up in the second tier in 2022. The 2024/25 season went the other way: 17th place and relegation to the 3. Liga, a drop that came wrapped in controversy after a replay ordered elsewhere in the league by the German Handball Federation's court and a rejected plan to widen the division. Liga in 2025/26 and winning the promotion round back to the 2. Bundesliga for 2026/27.

The sharper edge of the calendar belongs to SG Ahlen, the Westfalen-Derby, a rivalry the two clubs once set aside entirely when they merged into HSG Ahlen-Hamm for the 2010/11 Bundesliga season. That side went down in 17th place, and the money disputes that followed the relegation pushed both clubs back toward playing under their own names again.
