HC Zalău Women

Zalău's women play in Romania's top division as HC Zalău, and play in front of at most 950 people at the Sala Sporturilor "Gheorghe Tadici", a hall named for one of the three men who set the club up in 1978 under the name Didactica Zalău.

The sponsor changes came thick through the eighties and nineties — Textila, Silcotex, Silcotub — before the club settled on HC Zalău in 2005. Three Liga Națională titles, in 2001, 2004 and 2005, sit alongside a domestic cup won in 2003, but the club finished second in the league eight times across the nineties and early 2000s.

In the 1995–96 season the club won the EHF Challenge Cup, the first Romanian team to take that trophy, and rounded off the campaign with third place in the EHF Champions Trophy. A second European final followed in 2011–12, when Zalău lost the EHF Cup final to Lada Togliatti. Domestically, the fixture against CSM Minaur Baia Mare carries its own name, the Transylvania Derby.

Three national titles, one Romanian cup, one European cup: five trophies in total mark out what this club from a town of modest size has taken from Romanian handball.
