HK Hlohovec

Hlohovec has built its sporting name almost entirely on handball.

The women's section, still carrying the Odeva name at the time, did the thing the club is remembered for: it became the first Slovak side to win the Czechoslovak championship, taking the title in the 1968/69 season and again in 1969/70 and 1972/73, and adding the Czechoslovak Cup in 1973 and 1976.

The men's team caught up only once the club had become Sporta, winning the Slovak Extraliga five times between 2010 and 2016. Center back Ľubomír Ďuriš anchored those sides and went on to play for the Slovakia national team. The cup never came with it: Sporta reached the final three times in that same stretch and lost all three, every time to Tatran Prešov, the club that has dominated Slovak handball and remains Hlohovec's fiercest rival. Closer to home, the derby is against Piešťany.
