Houten

Handbal Houten shares its derby with HV Nieuwegein, a rivalry close enough that between 2017 and 2020 the two sides set it aside altogether and fielded a joint team, NHC.

The club traces back to Handbal Vereniging Houten, formed in October 1983, and took its current name, Handbal Houten, in 2014. Its men's side has climbed the Dutch pyramid in stages: the fourth-tier 1e Klasse in 2004/05, the third-tier Hoofdklasse in 2009/10, and from there the Eredivisie title itself, taken three times, in 2017/18, 2018/19 and 2022/23. The women's team has stayed in the Hoofdklasse without a national title to show for it.

Matches are played at Sporthal The Dome, in front of a hall that holds 1,500. Mads Kamst and Sonni de Jonge are among the names supporters point to from these championship sides.

The Nieuwegein fixture remains the one Houten circles first: a local rivalry that survived even a spell of playing together under one badge.
