He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1977, one of three Kansas alumni to reach Canton alongside John Riggins and Mike McCormack. The list runs further into the professional game than a college program in Lawrence might suggest: John Hadl went on to win an AFL championship and an NFL Most Valuable Player award, Curtis McClinton scored the first touchdown in Super Bowl history, and Dana Stubblefield was named Defensive Player of the Year before winning a Super Bowl with San Francisco.

The program itself dates to 1890, and for long stretches of its history the championships came in clusters tied to whichever conference Kansas happened to play in. Two Missouri Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Association titles arrived in 1908 and 1923; the Big Eight, the conference's later name, produced four more between 1930 and 1968.

Games are played at David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium in Lawrence, built to hold just over 41,000 but once packed to more than 52,000 for a single occasion.
