Ray Hanson wanted his players called something other than the university's old nickname, and in 1927 the Marine Corps veteran got his wish.
Football at Macomb predates the nickname by a generation — an unofficial side took the field in 1902, a year before the program was formally organised. The championships that followed came in clusters tied to conference realignment: seven Illinois Intercollegiate Athletic Conference titles between 1939 and 1969. The Leathernecks reached the Division I-AA semifinals with an 11–3 record still spoken of as the best in the program's history.
The rivalry with Illinois State stretches back to 1904.
That top has been harder to reach lately. Winless seasons in 2022 and 2023 cost Myers Hendrickson his job, and Joe Davis took over in 2024 just as the Leathernecks left the Missouri Valley Football Conference after sixteen years for the Ohio Valley Conference.
