Loko go into this Junior Hockey League season as the team every other club in Yaroslavl's system measures itself against. They have just come off the 2025–26 campaign as MHL champions, and that Harlamov Cup arrived alongside the Kontinental Hockey League title won by the parent club, Lokomotiv Yaroslavl — the first time a club and its junior affiliate have taken both trophies in the same year.

That double sits on top of three earlier Harlamov Cups, won in 2016, 2018 and 2019, which already made Loko the most decorated team in the league's history before this season added a fourth. Two other finals ended the other way, against MHC Dynamo Moscow in 2021 and against SKA-1946 in 2024, and it is Spartak's junior side that keeps turning up on the other bench in the biggest games, including the 2026 final.

The club exists because Yaroslavl's senior team needed one. Loko was built in 2009 out of a farm side that had operated under different names since the late 1980s, and its purpose sharpened in a way nobody at the club would have chosen: after the plane crash of 7 September 2011 killed the entire Lokomotiv roster and coaching staff, none of whom were travelling with the junior team, Loko's players and staff became the people the senior club had to rebuild around.

The team plays at Arena 2000, seating just over 9,000 for hockey, and carries the parent club's red, white and blue along with the shared nickname "Zheleznodorozhniki" — the Railwaymen. Among those who came through its ranks, Alexei Cherepanov is the name still spoken of first in Yaroslavl.
