Basketball in Ludwigsburg started as a department inside a larger sports club, DJK Ludwigsburg, in 1960. Money problems pushed it into SpVgg 07 Ludwigsburg in 1970, and it carried that name until 1987, when the basketball side finally broke away and became its own club, BG Ludwigsburg. Sponsorship has renamed it twice more since: EnBW Ludwigsburg from 2002, then Neckar Riesen Ludwigsburg from 2012, before MHP took over the naming rights in 2014. The nickname "Die Riesen" — the Giants — dates only from the Neckar Riesen years, though the club now built around it is far older than the name suggests.

The Bundesliga title itself has never come, and the closest it got was a runners-up finish in 2020, when Alba Berlin beat them to it. A domestic cup has likewise stayed out of reach twice over, in 1992 and 2008. Third place in the Basketball Champions League in 2021–22, after losing the bronze match to UCAM Murcia, built on groundwork laid by John Patrick.

Ariel Hukporti is its clearest product to reach the top. David McCray belongs to an earlier era of the club's identity: his number 4 was retired in 2019, and he stayed on afterward as sporting director.
