Bud Adams put money into a league nobody yet trusted, and within two seasons his club had the trophy to prove it: as a charter member of the American Football League, the Houston side beat the Los Angeles Chargers for the 1960 title and the San Diego Chargers for the 1961 one, back to back, while the older NFL was still deciding whether the AFL was worth taking seriously.
That franchise carried Adams's Oilers name for decades before it moved. In 1997 it relocated to Nashville, and the name was dropped for good in 1999 when the Titans took its place.
The Titans beat the Jacksonville Jaguars 6–3 for the AFC Championship that year and went on to Super Bowl XXXIV, where they lost to the St Louis Rams. It was the Jaguars who had stood between Nashville and the title all season, division rivals from the same AFC grouping.
